Deal Castle & Godnestone Gardens
Deal Castle is one of the finest Tudor artillery works in England. It was built as part of coastal fortresses at great speed in the 16th Century by order of Henry VIII who feared invasion from Europe. Its squat rounded turrets were designed to stop incoming cannon fire and act as platforms from which to launch artillery barrages. No entrance costs. After lunch at Deal on to Godnestone Park Gardens. Jane Austin was a frequent visitor as her brother married a daughter of the house. The pretty gardens have an arboretum adjoining a mature woodland area with a 1920’s rockery. The walled garden dating back to the 17th Century was replante 30 years ago. There is also a gravel garden, parkland and pond. Not suitable for the less mobile. Entrance costs approx £4. No food costs included.
