English for Speakers of Other Languages
ESOL
ESOL courses are English classes for adults whose first language is not English and who need to improve their language skills for everyday life, citizenship, work or academic purposes. Students practise speaking, listening, reading and writing. There are classes at all levels from beginners to advanced; also some specialised courses such as literacy (extra help with reading and writing), ESOL with Computers and ESOL for Childcare.

Joining a Class
It is important to find the class that is best for you, so please go to one of the following main centres to fill in a yellow ESOL Referral Form: Brampton Road Adult Education Centre, Sidcup Arts and Adult Education Centre or Southlake Centre (details on page 62). We will write to you to ask you to come for an interview.
Fees
The Learning and Skills Council has changed the fee structure and we can no longer offer free classes to all students. The fees could be as little as £1* per hour (plus £5.00 annual registration fee). We will check your eligibility at interview. You must bring your passport or immigration papers to your interview and any proof of benefits. * The total cost of the course will depend on the number of hours a week. Most classes are 4 hours a week for 30 weeks. We will tell you the cost of the course at your interview.
Language Support
There are many different courses in this brochure which might interest you. We may be able to arrange extra help with English if you take one of these courses. Please speak to your tutor.
